Skype, a secure communication software program that allows consumers to make phone communications with friends, family or co-workers over the internet, has been around since its start in 2003. In providing individuals and companies with free phone calls, texting or even sharing of files, the concept is quickly catching on. Its ever-growing popularity is also now occuring via cellular phone usage. With the new iPod Touch, iPad and other smartphones now on the market, it seems that a great deal of software, including that of Skype, is becoming mobile.

Skype was initially founded in Sweden, by individuals: Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom. In 2003 both the domain name and the first beta version were released. Shortly thereafter Skype released an update that included video-conferencing options and Windows version 4 (full and compact screening options) in 2008. The idea became so useful, that individuals were initially using their desktop and laptop computers for more calls than that of their cellular phones. With visual capabilities, it was easy to connect with individuals or groups by using both audio and visual features.

Later in 2010, it was reported that not only were individuals using Skype for local calls, but mainly in the interest of long-distance calls. It was reported that over ten percent of all long-distance calls nationwide were being provided by Skype. This meant that over four hundred billion minutes of long-distance calls were being used via Skype at this time. To date, there are currently over twenty-three million users of Skype in the world today.

It is easy to state that Skype has become growingly popular, especially with respects to long-distance calling. It is also growing in popularity with respects to mobile Skype-ing. As feature and smart phone users around the globe are accessing their Facebook, Twitter, email and other online software on the go, why would using Skype be any different? As most phones now carry a camera of some sort, using Skype on-the-go makes it easy to see and speak with anybody around the globe.

There is even now, a Skype wi-fi phone. Consumers who purchase this phone can make Skype calls, and even see which of their fellow Skype users are online, using a drop-down menu. Also in 2010, Nimbuzz made it possible for Blackberry users to perform Skype calls to be used via their cellular systems. Even if a phone is in need of Blackberry repair, it is still easy to access an account via a friend or spouse's cellular device. In operating twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, all cellular communications centers are now looking into their possible opportunities with Skype.

Skype is currently run out of Luxembourg, although the company name holds many other offices within additional European countries. Today Skype has stated that more than forty percent of calls made through their system are video calls. Being used for conference centers, on-the-road sales personnel, video calls to family, almost half of Skype's users are interested in the visual angle of their communication.

Skype currently also sells webcams, headsets, etc. on their website, including that of heartier packages for their calling system. Although as most customers are now using their camera via cellular phone, these accessories are mainly for standard at-home use. Skype is becoming just another fine feature of owning a cellular phone in today's world.
