Skype, the renowned voice call and chat service company that was taken over by Microsoft for US$8.5 million late last year, has announced a new version 'built from the ground up' of the chat application for the latest Windows 8. The application became available on the Windows Store from 26, October, the day on which Windows 8 became generally available. The latest Skype for windows 8 is a modern-style app that is it opens up as a full screen application. It comes with the tiled look and feel, and you can see the recent chat messages, calls, and your favourite contacts as soon as you launch the app. The new app also comes with a modern User Interface-influenced dial pad.

Users can also run the application in the background, so that they can receive voice and video chats and calls, even if they are working on another application or at the desktop. The users can see a notification of all the new messages and calls as a rectangular popup at the right corner of the screen. The Skype live tile on the Windows 8 Smart Screen will notify you about the missed calls and also offer a glimpse of new messages. It also supports snap multi-tasking, so that users can dock the app on one side while working on another application.

The new version also integrates with the Microsoft account, which means you do not require a different user name and password. Obviously, this means that it can be connected with the People app, and your contacts on Skype will appear on the app. With this application, you can pin a contact to the Start screen and then calling your friends and family become just a matter of a tap.

Skype for Windows 8 will be available pre-loaded on devices from manufactured by the 12 companies namely Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, LG, Fujitsu, and MSI. However, it will not be pre-installed on the Surface RT tablets at least not for the first shipments.

There will also be a Skype for Windows 8 desktop client supporting collaboration and productivity tools like file transfer and group video calling, which are not offered with the modern-style app at this moment. This was truly a smart step by Microsoft putting more weight to the Windows 8 launch. It is an incredible version of Skype for enhanced user experience and immersive fun. It can be downloaded for free from the Windows store.
