First released in 2003, Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls via the internet using a regular computer or laptop. Skype is an extremely popular piece of software that boasts 521 million users worldwide with 22 million users online daily. Skype not only allows users to make free calls via the internet but also supports web cam use and multiple conversations. Although Skype is a worldwide success, this versatile piece of software does have its downsides which can easily be overcome by other means of communication.

The age old adage 'nothing in life comes for free' might find a resonance with many a Skype user when they're faced with broken lines or crackly phone calls. While Skype to Skype calls are free, unfortunately the service isn't guaranteed against technical difficulties. Using web cams in particular are prone to pixelated or delayed footage which can easily punctuate an otherwise free flowing conversation with interruptions and distractions. In order to get round technical difficulties, users are recommended to have a fast and stable internet connection as well as a high quality web cam for optimum interaction.

Skype doesn't just service phone calls between users but also allows callers to dial mobile and landline numbers. Unfortunately this service isn't free and isn't nearly as cheap as other services. Using access codes to get cheap international calls means the difference between paying 7p a minute to phone Bangladesh with Skype or 2p a minute with an access code. Access codes allow reduced calls to be made from both landlines and mobiles, meaning cheap international calls are almost on the same level as calling a next door in the same country.

Another downside with Skype is that people looking to make free calls to other computers are literally tied to their computer! Unless the person you want to call has Skype on his/her mobile - allowing you to make free video calls on the go - both callers are reliant on a powerful internet connection as well as access to a computer full stop. If callers want more freedom to make cheap international calls to landlines or mobiles abroad, another alternative means is to use a calling card. Compared to modern developments like access codes and VOIP, calling cards allow you to set the amount of money you want to spend, thus reducing costly or unexpected phone bills.

The final downside to Skype is that both users have to be present at the same time. Communicating via email, text or even leaving a voicemail allows you to continue communicating regardless of whether the person you are contacting is around. Communicating via email and text allows for better time management and is especially useful for people working or living in different time zones. With regard to Skype videocalling, this not only forces both people to be present at the same time but also can be perceived by some people as an invasion of personal space given that users can see exactly what is going on in the other callers place of work or even their home.
